Supporting refugees both in the UK and in Ukraine
The needs of Ukrainian refugees, both in UK and in Ukraine, are developing all the time. Funds raised will be used to help meet those needs in both countries, depending on current priorities.
In Ukraine ...
Over the past 18 months we purchased and collected a wide range of essential aid items and arranged for their shipment, including medical supplies, blankets, and clothing. We run various events in the Guildford/Waverley area to collect donations to support this and to and raise awareness of the plight of the victims of the war.
We work in partnership with Ukraine Mission, who are based in the Guildford area and run regular shipments to Ukraine, ensuring the aid is delivered where it is needed most. The video below explains the desperate situation of those in the areas close to the front line, and how Ukraine Mission are helping them.
We're also specifically raising funds to support the hospital in Nikopol. Nikopol lies on the North bank of the Dnipro River, directly opposite the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant which is occupied by the Russian army, and as a result it regularly comes under missile attack. The hospital continues to operate in these highly challenging circumstances, but as more and more government funding is diverted to military operations it is running very short of money and relies heavily on donations and volunteer assistance.
Top of their list of needs right now are portable ultrasound machines, needed both for regular use and in emergencies following artillery and drone strikes on civilians, which are all too common.
In the UK ...
Most Ukrainian refugees who came to the UK under the Homes for Ukraine scheme have now found their feet. The majority have accommodation and school places for their children, and many have found work. But many still face difficult challenges and need the support of community groups. There are lots of ways in which the local community can help them, and Neighbours Welcome will support deserving projects for their benefit in the Guildford/Waverley area, working together with other local community organisations such as GUkraine. We are currently fundraising in aid of GUkraine's "Ukraine Hub" in Guildford, which provides a meeting place, English conversation classes and free fruit, vegetables and eggs to local Ukrainian refugees.
